The Sacraments Explained: Milestones of Catholic Life

The sacraments are central to Catholic life. They are sacred rituals through which Catholics believe God's grace is made visible and active in the world. There are seven sacraments, each marking important spiritual milestones or providing ongoing spiritual nourishment.

The Sacraments of Initiation

Baptism is the foundation. Through this sacrament, a person becomes a member of the Catholic Church and original sin is forgiven. Most Catholics are baptised as infants, though adults can be baptised at any time.

Confirmation typically takes place during the teenage years. Young people renew their baptismal promises and receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. A bishop usually presides over this sacrament, and candidates choose a confirmation name.

The Eucharist, or Holy Communion, is received for the first time after a period of preparation, usually around age seven. Catholics then receive Communion regularly at Mass throughout their lives, nourishing their spiritual journey.

The Sacraments of Healing

Reconciliation (Confession) offers forgiveness for sins committed after Baptism. Catholics confess their sins to a priest in confidence, receive absolution, and are given a penance to perform. Many find this sacrament deeply healing and liberating.

The Anointing of the Sick is available to anyone facing serious illness or approaching the end of life. Through anointing with holy oil and prayer, the Church offers spiritual comfort and strength during difficult times.

The Sacraments of Commitment

Holy Orders is the sacrament through which men are ordained as deacons, priests, or bishops. They commit their lives to serving the Church and its people.

Matrimony is the sacrament of marriage. A Catholic couple exchange vows before God and the Church community, promising lifelong commitment and openness to family life.

Why Sacraments Matter

Sacraments are visible signs of invisible grace. They connect us to Christ's saving work and to the broader Catholic community across time and space. Whether you're preparing for your first sacrament or simply curious about Catholic practice, our parish welcomes your questions and invites you to explore these meaningful rituals.
