Our Conference is the Rushden Conference of the Society, the Headquarters of which in UK is based in London. We have been active in the Parish and the town for over 25 years and currently have twelve full and ten auxiliary members. Details of the aims and objectives of the Society as a whole - which we endeavour to meet - can be found on the National Web Site at www.svp.org.uk

We endeavour to be represented at funerals of Parishioners, and, wherever possible, we attend the funerals of any people that we have visited (i.e. those other than our own Parishioners). In our last reported year we made 2,371 visits to local people in need in some way. We also facilitate the Parish Bereavement support group (Time Together), which meets once a month and has an average attendance of 25 people.

Each year we deliver Christmas parcels and gifts to needy families and those we visit. All the gifts and items for the parcels are donated by Parishioners through a ‘Giving Tree’, which is available on the First Sunday in Advent each year.

The Conference is currently running its fourth wheel chair accessible ambulance/minibus. We obtained our first ex-Health Authority ambulance about 25 years ago through funding within the SVP. Our second was donated by the local Round Table and the third and fourth were funded by the National Lottery. The most recent minibus was delivered in April 2006.

For fifteen years we have worked in partnership with a local charity, SERVE, who provide day centres for the elderly and disabled; each week day our minibus is used to transport clients to and from one or more of SERVE’s day centres.

We are indebted to Rushden Round Table for their financial support each year, which makes a large contribution to our annual running costs. In addition, SERVE provide most of the fuel and pay a share of the repairs.

As well as providing transport to the day centres, we also transport people to the Rushden & Higham Ferrers Arthritis Club, the Sounds Good Club (for the visually impaired) at Wellingborough Library, along with bringing people to two of the three Masses each weekend. We also take people from local residential homes on occasional outings. A total of 3,296 passengers were transported in the last year.

The Conference is twinned with two Conferences, one in India and one in Grenada.

If you are interested in joining us or helping in any way, please contact Maureen Williamson via the Parish Office.
